The mission of the Western Slope Conservation Center is to build an active and aware community to protect and enhance the lands, air, water, and wildlife of the Lower Gunnison Watershed. As a result of our work, in 35 years the communities of the Lower Gunnison Watershed will be characterized by intact and functioning ecosystems, clean and abundant water resources, well-managed lands with the highest level of protection they deserve, and informed and an engaged citizenry that understand the connection between the vitality of its ecological and social communities.

We send money to help support the study and practice of Tibetan monks and nuns at several of the large monastic institutions in India.

The Maitreya School located in Bodhgaya India

Maitreya School (MS) is a social project of Root Institute for Wisdom Culture in Bihar, India, under the patronage and guidance of Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche. MS, a free school operates solely through donations, benefiting local impoverished children from Bodhgaya and nearby villages. It was started in April 2012 with an initial intake of 62 children. At present, we have a total of about 250 students with 9 classes ranging from Lower Kindergarten to Class 7.

Maitreya School gives children living in one of India’s poorest state the chance not only to receive a traditional education but more importantly to receive life skills training of compassion, honesty, and loving-kindness presented through the Mahayana Buddhist vehicle, and the 16 Guidelines based on Universal Principles. As part of the vision, our Spiritual Director, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, would like our school to create its own Buddhist curriculum from texts used in Tibetan schools, translated into Hindi. Rinpoche hopes our school will become a model for other schools in India.
